Gardening, Reading, Watching, and Listening for July

Dear Readers, I missed our chat last month as it’s always something I enjoy, but it seems that Life has simply taken over and there is nothing for me to do but hang on and go with the flow of family and church activities. Life does have its rhythms, and I am looking forward to having mine slow down a bit, but for the moment, here’s a quick report.

Gardening

First, since I have spent so little time in the garden this summer, I’ll just give you some pictures I’ve managed to take out my windows.

Reading

As for reading, in keeping my tradition of never sending a newsletter without offering a Free Read, this month I have an unpromoted special just for my readers. (You are welcome to share with family and friends, but I won’t be promoting it through a wider service.)

Grave Matters, Lord Danvers Investigates, book 3, will be FREE Thursday July 10 through Monday July 14.

Antonia discovers a body at the opening of the Great Exhibition, in the presence of Queen Victoria, no less. The newly married Lord and Lady Danvers put all such unpleasantness behind them, though, as they sail off in his aerostat for a secluded honeymoon in Scotland. Until the shades of grave robbers a generation earlier come back to haunt them.

Watching

I mentioned above being a bit overwhelmed with church activities. One of our most successful events this summer was being able to offer our community an excellent production of a new drama: Saul, A Tragedy in Five Acts.

Our family had enjoyed watching the House of David series, so I was anxious to see this production focusing on Saul, the quintessential tragic hero. It was a wonderful evening seeing this important character from the Old Testament come to life and following his heart-rending fall through disobedience to God’s commandments.

I also recommend House of David, available to stream on Amazon Prime, for gripping family viewing. Yes, there are some “Hollywood” moments. They depart from the scriptural text in a few places: inexplicably they choose to have Saul’s wife bring the Witch of Endor to her husband, and they do make a meal out of the battle scenes. Still, watching it as a family was a great way to bring the Old Testament to life and our teenage grandson loved it.

Listening

If you enjoy watching pictures in your head rather than on the screen, however, let me introduce you to my favorite podcaster Adam Graham and his “Great Detectives of Old-Time Radio" series.

This summer Adam is featuring the stories of Robert Louis Stevenson recorded by radio greats such as William Conrad and Orson Welles. The series begins with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And Adam has uncovered a literary and historic gem in a letter Stevenson wrote to a real-life Doctor Hyde. I’ll let you read all about it here.
