Adam Graham Uncovers Robert Louis Stevenson’s Letter to a Real Dr. Hyde Featured in New Podcast Series

Popular podcaster Adam Graham, who continues to bring us the “The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio,” has launched a special summer series chosen by his Patreon Sponsors: Robert Louis Stevenson, Favorite Stories.

“the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” opens the series. This classic story, written in 1885, of a mild-mannered scientist who turned into the beastly Edward Hyde originally aired October 15, 1946. It stars William Conrad as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde

And, amazingly, Graham caps that with a little-known letter of Stevenson’s to a real-life Mr. Hyde--the Reverend Dr. Charles McEwen Hyde of Honolulu. The letter, which Stevenson published as a pamphlet for wide distribution, is broadcast as a dramatic reading by Orson Welles. As Stevenson mentions in his letter, Hyde had been a good friend to him, but the cleric’s attack on the saintly Father Damien who served as a missionary to the lepers on the island of Moloka'i for 16 years, impelled Stevenson to jump to Fr Damien's defense and include an attack on Hyde.

Father Damien improved the lives of the residents of the island leper colony by building, homes, hospitals, and churches, and establishing a freshwater supply. He dressed wounds, dug graves, and made coffins as well as offering religious services and comforting the people. In 1885 Damien contracted leprosy himself but continued his work until his death from the disease in 1889 at the age of 49.

Welles delivers a powerful reading of Stevenson’s letter defending the missionary against the scathing remarks of Hyde who accuses Damien of being a “coarse, dirty man,” questioning his motives, and suggesting his leprosy stemmed from “vices and carelessness.” Stevenson’s impassioned response, penned in 1890, highlights the stark contrasts between the selfless heroism of Father Damien and the hypocrisy of his critics who lived in comfort, even splendor in Honolulu.

Welles’ reading brings to life the rich historical context and emotional weight of Stevenson’s words, showcasing not only a brilliant literary takedown but also a tribute to compassion and service in the face of adversity. Welles’ masterful narration brings this poignant piece to life, reminding us of the enduring legacy of Father Damien.

It is widely accepted that Stevenson was significantly inspired by the life of William Brodie, a respected Edinburgh cabinet-maker and city councilor by day, but also by night a burglar who robbed wealthy homes to fund his gambling and other vices. Since Stevenson was also from Edinburgh he would have known of the story which served as an example of the duality of human nature and people's capacity for both good and evil which he explores in his Novella.

Yet, I wonder. Was Stevenson's choice of names for the evil persona in his novella (written 4 years before his public dispute with Hyde) an ironic coincidence, or did he already sense the duplicity in his acquaintance?
