Seattle book Signing: A Grand Day Out

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ January 26, 2011

What a great day yesterday! A book signing for A VERY PRIVATE GRAVE at The Seattle Mystery Bookshop. It’s always fun to get out and about, explore new-to-me bookstores and meet readers, of course, but this day was so very extra special because a wonderful group of writer friends from the old days showed up.

First, about The Seattle Mystery Bookshop (http://www.seattlemystery.com/) In a day when all brick and mortar book stores are fighting for their existence and independents must fight twice as hard, it was such a delight to experience this great bookshop filled literally to the rafters with wonderful books.

And these people are doing everything right to attract writers and readers, regularly hosting a list of writers and promoting their book signings through every means at hand. The format is that signings are one hour, from noon to 1:00 in order to accommodate readers in the busy downtown Seattle area. Any books left unsold after the signing are then autographed and stickered "Autographed by Author", the guest is invited to write in their Author Book which contains notes from well-known authors, and then set up to write on their blog then and there:(http://seattlemysteryblog.typepad.com/)

I was especially interested when they told me that their collectors specialize in having books signed within a month of publication. I understand collecting first editions, of course, but early autographs was new to me. They were willing to accommodate me even though A VERY PRIVATE GRAVE came out last fall, however, because book 2 in the Monastery Murders, A DARKLY HIDDEN TRUTH, will be out in the coming months and this could serve as an introduction to their collectors, an idea I endorsed enthusiastically.

And now, to the party. I’ll let the pictures tell the story, but let me make a few introductions:

Award-winning romance and mystery writer Sandy Dengler was my roommate at my first Romance Writers of America conference.  In my innocent youth Sandy introduced me to spiked orange juice and I giggled the rest of the night.  And I've never tasted orange juice that great again.

Elaine Wright Colvin is the woman I owe my career to— as do hundreds, maybe thousands of other writers.  Elaine badgered me into taking my writing seriously, marched me off to my first writers' conference practically at gun point, edited my first manuscript and kept me at it all until I was so thoroughly hooked on the process that I've never quit, and taught me the business so well that I've never had to quit.  Thank you Elaine.

Here, with Brenda Wilbee, author of the Sweetbriar series on the history of Seattle and historian and writer Judy Slotemaker.

And then to lunch.  Dee Kamp, at the end of the table, has just had her first book, a devotional Strength for Today, Hope for Tomorrow published by Forever Books, which is Elaine's new publishing company.  And so it all continues.

What a wonderful event. I love the idea of blogging right there in the shop. Very cool. Those local author stickers and autographed copies always catch my eye.

Congrats on the booksigning success!
Thanks for sharing.
