Day 1 With Jane Austen in Huntington Beach

Today the activities were all pre-conference events, the serious academics will start tomorrow. After a brief time on our balcony I was off to get acquainted with this enormous and lovely resort, and to enjoy the fact that the ocean is seldom out of sight.
As I mentioned in my last blog, one of the best parts is seeing friends from other conferences again. Frances Wills above and Syrie James below, were just two of them.
My major activity today was the two English country dancing classes I took. That was three hours of dancing. add to that several third of a mile treks from our room to the conference center and I felt I had plenty of exercise.
Afternoon tea was accompanied with two lectures, one on eighteenth century fashion and one on decorative arts.
Stan and I enjoyed dinner this evening on the patio.
Then finished the evening with two plays. This one a witty dialogue between Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen as Jane interviews Charlotte on her entry into heaven and chides Charlotte for the unflattering things she said about Jane's writing. And, at the end of a long day, an improvisational troupe, Jane Austen Unscripted.
Tomorrow, more delights.

The improv was amazing--especially when the "rode" horses. Our daughter-in-law does Italian Renaissance improv, but this was the first time I've seen a Regency group.
