I can remember the time when the main topic of conversation when authors got together was griping about their publishers. On my side, I feel a real debt of gratitude to those who publish me. It is a considerable act of faith to invest money in the work of an author in these often difficult times.
I am particularly happy with and for my new publisher Darton, Longman and Todd. I departed from a long run of crime novels to write a book of information, advice and prayer about Dementia. I sent
Prayers for Dementia: and how to live well with it to a publisher I had often worked with. He liked it, but felt it was not commercially viable.
I disagreed. There are so many people nowadays with dementia, or whose lives have been touched by it. And there are not nearly enough books about it which are both honest and encouraging. Dementia is not an instant tragedy. There can be hard times ahead, but still much enjoyable life.
I tried another publisher I had written for. Still no joy. But on the third attempt I struck gold. I have always had a high regard for Darton, Longman and Todd and their list, so I was not just pleased to have found a publisher, but also one I was proud and delighted to join.
And it was better than that. DLT thought the books might sell better as part of a series. So they commissioned
Prayers for Depression: and how best to live with it.
Naturally, I had some anxiety. What if the first publisher was right? What if the books did not sell? So I was delighted when my editor told me that initial orders for both books is double what they would normally expect, and that this is happening across the whole range of sales outlets. Not only had my faith in the books been justified, but his too. He had taken a risk, because he thought these were books DLT ought to publish. I�m so pleased that his judgement has been validated.
So now we are looking forward to publication this week. A feature article has been lined up with the magazine Devon Life. There is always that feeling that every author knows, when you launch a new book out into the world and wait to see what happens. I can only hope that the response will go on being as positive as the initial results.
And a big thank you to the publisher who had faith in me.
