It's a Wrap, Wendy Jones Launches Book 3 in DI Shona McKenzie Series

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ November 15, 2015

I'm delighted today to be joining in the general celebration over the launch of Wendy Jones' newest book Killer's Cross, book 3 in her phenomenally successful DI Shona McKenzie tartan noir series. Killer's Countdown, Killer's Craft and Killer's Cross have come out at the breath-taking speed of 3 books in 13 months so I've asked Wendy to talk to us about her writing process. Over to you, Wendy--

Thank you Donna for inviting me along to your blog. It is always a pleasure to spend time with you and your readers. I am particularly excited at the moment as my new book, Killer’s Cross, Launches on 16th November, 2015. More about that later.

I am fairly new to writing, but in the past year I have released my first three novels. I know this sounds like I am storming ahead, and have taken to writing like a duck to water. Donna has asked me to talk about how I have managed to be so prolific in order to help others. This is due to a number of factors, and I am writing about these in the hope they will help other authors.

Firstly, I have to be up front and say that I actually started the writing of the books over three years ago. I was challenged by Author Amy Boucher Pye to try National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, the name by which it is more commonly known. This involves pledging to write 50,000 words in the month of November. This is not a post about NaNoWriMo, but it is a fabulous way of getting my first draft off to a cracking start. It also allows me to prioritise writing. I also do camp NaNo in July, meaning I can get two first drafts done in a year.

I also prioritise tasks during the day. This can involve writing in the morning, and editing in the afternoon. This is just a simple version. Putting time in my diary for various aspects of writing and marketing assists me in actually doing the tasks. It is like a very precise to do list.

I am lucky in that I am an any time, anywhere sort of girl, in a literary sense of course. I often take my laptop or iPad with me and write on the go. I write on trains, whilst waiting for hospital appointments, in coffee shops, in a drop in centre where I volunteer, in the library, in various rooms in my house etc. I find this gives me new ideas and a fresh perspective. I know other writers who cannot work in this way and have to be at their desk. I am fortunate in that variety helps me.

This brings me to my third book, which was written in such a way. Killer’s Cross is the third book in the DI Shona McKenzie Mysteries. Shona is facing her most puzzling case yet. Members of the religious community are being dumped on the steps of Dundee Churches. They all have a cross carved on their chests. Join Shona in a whirlwind ride throughout Scotland                                                                                                                      to catch the killer before he kills again.

This brings me to the one main point which keeps me writing at such a speed. Seeing my books on the shelves in bookshops, and knowing people are enjoying them, makes me want to write more. The enjoyment they bring to others is my biggest motivation. It keeps me putting one finger in front of the other on my keyboard, or wielding a pen and notebook.

I hope this has helped all those writers out there. If you are a reader I hope you have found it interesting to get a glimpse into a writer’s life.
