Syrie James and The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ February 10, 2014

I first "met" Syrie James in what is perhaps the best way to meet any author, through reading her book. Others in my local JASNA chapter (Jane Austen Society of North America) recommended Syrie’s book The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen and I took their advice. I found the book "A Delightful Pastiche," as I titled my Amazon review: http://j.mp/1iHCpN9

Syrie James' Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen is one of the best Jane Austen spin-offs I've ever read. She did a great job of giving us the known outline of events in Jane's life, then filled in with possible scenes which Jane herself could have drawn on as background for her own stories. I had great fun identifying the scenes as they played out in the novels. By working backwards this way Syrie James shows she truly understands how a writer's mind works.

So with that background and a few e-mail exchanges, which included watching the video of the comedic play Syrie wrote for the JASNA annual meeting in New York on the theme of "Sex Money and Power in the Novels of Jane Austen" http://j.mp/Nvguyz I was especially excited to meet Syrie at last year’s JASNA AGM in Minneapolis.

We got to sit together at the book signing event where Syrie graciously autographed her new book The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen for me.

Alas, for me the title became all too literal as I lost a box of my books at the conference— the box containing my copy of The Missing Manuscript. So I had to wait for events to conspire for a full replacement: A friend gave me a new copy of the book that for me had, indeed gone missing, and then last month when I was in the Los Angeles area I got to have lunch with Syrie and have the autograph replaced as well.

I recently blogged about our luncheon and my adventure exploring Jane Austen first editions the next day http://j.mp/1iHLJAM

And now all that’s left is to tell the world what a delightful book The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen is— even when, in my case is was a matter of The Missing Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen.

Here’s my Amazon Review: A new book by Syrie James is always a cause for rejoicing among her readers. The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen is cause for celebration for both the devout Janeite and those readers new to the world of Jane Austen. Longtime readers of Jane Austen’s novels will appreciate the accuracy of James’ research and enjoy playing "spot the reference" in the manuscript that purports to be a lost early work of Austen where she was trying out ideas that flowered in later novels. Readers without that knowledge on hand will be glad of the information provided when Samantha discusses their find with Anthony. All readers will enjoy the double-level romances from Regency times and from today— and the cliffhanger that keeps you guessing until the end.
