Plumbing an Author's Mind, My Morning in Winter Springs, Florida

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ February 19, 2013

Yes, I'm here at my desk in Boise, Idaho, but I just spent half an hour in Winter Springs, Florida, with the lovely ladies of the Christian Literature Fellowship Book Club. The ladies had already discussed my book A VERY PRIVATE GRAVE and Jean, the club director in whose beautiful home they were meeting, had told them to come prepared with a question for me.

It all began many, many years ago when Ellen, who has since become a dear friend, read GLASTONBURY and wrote me a wonderful fan letter. Remember those— the old-fashioned, pen-on-paper, stamp-on-the-envelope kind? Although Ellen and I now email, she still occasionally writes a "real" letter— a delight to find in the mail box!

Perhaps a year ago Ellen nominated my book to be on the CLiF reading list and it was chosen. The group has twenty-some members and meets monthly. About a dozen were there for our Skype meeting this morning.

Before Jean introduced me to the others in our cyber meeting Judy had facilitated the discussion using the questions from my website http://ning.it/aBcH5N

Their questions for me went right to the heart of the matter. Ellen, who knows some of my family background, asked how much Felicity's experiences mirrored those of my my daughter who also studied theology in a monastery like Felicity.

From background, they moved on to "the mind of the author." After telling me some of the themes they found in the story, they asked me what was in my mind.  Then another asked about the scene where a young woman prays at the shrine of St. Cuthbert in Durham Cathedral. And, yes, I had a very specific picture in my mind when I wrote that—so clear that i thought I had a picture of it, but browsing my photos just now, I find that it exists only in my mind. This will have to do for a substitute, same girl with long hair, different setting:

Thank you so much Ellen, Jean, and all the ladies of CLiF for my delightful morning in Florida.

After such a great experience I'm up for more, so if any of my readers would like to have a similar meeting for your book club, just send me a note at DonnaFCrow@aol.com and I'll meet you in the ether.
