My husband and I love to sit down in the afternoons with a pot of tea and a good book, which he reads aloud. We have recently been slowly working our way through Boswell’s London Journal 1762-1763.

On 25 February 1763 a friend dropped by Boswell’s rooms for a late-night chat. His friend Dempster was contemplating writing a treatise on the causes of happiness and misery. Boswell records, “He considered the mind of man like a room, which is either made agreeable or the reverse by the pictures with which it is adorned. External circumstances are nothing to the purpose. Our great point is to have pleasing pictures in the inside. … The great art is to have an agreeable collection and to preserve them well.”

I thought immediately of Saint Paul’s advice in Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Our world is so beautiful if we look in the right places, listen to uplifting music, read optimistic books, take time to enjoy the loveliness of nature. But there is also so much darkness. The popularity of grim, discordant music; dystopic, noir novels; the rush of life, and the din of strident media that leave no time for contemplating beauty can make filling the rooms of our mind with pleasing pictures seem impossible.

Is my happiness at the mercy of external circumstances? Am I making choices that will leave lovely images on the walls of my mind? Can I shut out the external cacophony that would destroy the peace and beauty available to me?

What a delight to find an antidote to modern angst in voices who have gone before us. Meditate on these things.
