Reliving the Regency at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, A Dream Come True, Day One Getting There

Where would you go if you had a time machine? I wouldn’t be the least bit interested in going into the future—but I would relish a journey into the past. Imagine being able to walk the streets, wear the clothes, eat the food, listen to the music of your favorite historical period! That is exactly the experience attending the Jane Austen Festival in Bath offers.
It was a dream-come-true I had to wait for—as any fantasy fulfillment should require. After reading about the event and longing to attend for many years, my husband and I finally made reservations for the 2020 festival. Which, of course, didn’t happen. In 2023 Tamara Mackenthuen, my Jane Austen BFF, said, “Let’s go.” But there wasn’t time for proper preparation. I hate waiting. But, indeed, it took the full 18 months for proper planning, researching, and especially for sewing.
The sewing was Tamara’s department. She is an historic dressmaker and milliner who insists fiercely on historical accuracy. She says she makes “historically convincing” outfits. Whatever you call them, you will see throughout this series that she turned us out in a style that was definitely worth the wait.
Our long-time friend and sister Janeite Glenda Thomas completed the threesome. Reservations for accommodation in the Royal Crescent were confirmed. Wristbands for the Grand Promenade reserved. Tickets for Events purchased. Schedule set to meet at Heathrow and proceed to Bath together, with bonnets packed (by Tamara)...
And then, more waiting. As all readers of time travel novels know—something always goes wrong: Slippage with the Net, closure of the portal, ending up in the wrong location with floo powder… Or, more conventionally, airline delays.
Sure enough, my flight out of Boise was delayed. I missed my international connection. So, while my friends sent me pictures of settling in at Bath,
I spent the night in Denver, eventually made it out from Chicago the next day, and arrived in London at 6 a.m. Slippage, indeed. After countless frantic phone calls (I can’t imagine doing this before cell phones—although I did for years) our wonderful Jayride driver whisked me and my oversized luggage from the airport. I woke up Just as we whirled around the drive of the Royal Crescent.
In best British style Glenda popped the kettle on for tea while I reveled in our unbelievably perfect flat—a basement apartment that in earlier days would have been kitchen, scullery, and servants’ quarters. (Map of original layout adapted from No.1 Royal Crescent)
Revived by my proper cuppa,
we don our Regency attire—the clothes I traveled in were my only modern apparel—and set forth.
Appropriately, a dance workshop—in the Assembly Room—is my first event.
No Regency novel, movie, or fantasy was ever complete without a ball, and I began with dancing in the very room Jane Austen’s characters danced in.
Then back out on the street where we are stopped every 20 feet by a request to take our picture. All of Tamara’s work, Glenda’s support, and my daydreaming is paying off in real-time fulfillment. Tomorrow, the Grand Promenade and the Netherfield Ball. But not until I’ve had a night of sound sleep with Regency Lords and Ladies dancing through my dreams.

Really fun to read about! Thanks, Donna Good to see your pictures and video of glorious festivities in Bath. My mom and I stayed on the Royal Crescent in 1992. The apartment was a bed and breakfast up a few floors. The WC was cantilevered off to the back of the apartment. We loved sallying forth through the shops and stopping for tea.
