Jane Austen Takes Viewers to Portsmouth and Lyme in Video Portrayals

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ October 28, 2022

"Hello, I'm Jane. I have recently made brief returns from Paradise to embrace your amazing YouTube video technology for taking my friends to places I loved during my time on Earth. Portsmouth and Lyme were places dear to my family and to me."

"My brothers Frank and Charles both rose to the rank of Admiral in the Royal Navy and Frank, who became Admiral of the Fleet, made Portsmouth his home. Indeed, there was hardly a day of my adult life that news from Portsmouth wasn't of prime interest to all my family.

"Little wonder then, that I set a pivotal scene from my novel Mansfield Park in that town. I had great enjoyment recounting my attachment to Portsmouth and it's portrayal in my novel in my video."

"Likewise, the lovely seaside town of Lyme was my favorite of the many seashore resorts I visited with my family. We had two extended stays there where I greatly enjoyed sea-bathing, the assembly balls, and walking over the cliffs to the near-by town of Charmouth. I am delighted to be able to be able to share pictures of places I well remember there in my video."

"My readers--and it is a source of great joy and amazement to me that there are so many today--will recall the oh, so important scene I set in Lyme in my novel Persuasion. I hope you will enjoy seeing the cobb and other places dear to my memory."
