An English Spring and Lenten Reading

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ March 1, 2019

Lent 2019

As this goes out I will be in England. Last month I mentioned I would be speaking at MysteryFest in Portsmouth. From there I will spend a week at the seashore all along the south coast of England, visiting Jane Austen’s favorite holiday spots as research for my next Elizabeth and Richard literary suspense. And then, up to Manchester to visit our daughter and her family.

Which is why my garden pictures are ones our son-in-law recently sent of the perfect English spring they are enjoying. Fingers crossed that it holds—last year we were there during the dreaded “Beast from the East.”

My book special this month, in keeping with the Lenten season, is A Very Private Grave which opens on Ash Wednesday and continues through the penitential season. As part of your Lenten journey, I invite you to join Felicity Howard, a young American studying in a remote monastery in England. Felicity is devastated when she finds her beloved Fr. Dominic bludgeoned to death and Fr. Antony, her church history lecturer, soaked in his blood.

A Very Private Grave is a contemporary novel with a thoroughly modern heroine who must learn some age-old truths in order to solve the mystery and save her own life as she and Fr. Antony flee a murderer and follow clues across a sacred landscape. The narrative mixes intellectual puzzles, spiritual aspiration, romance and the solving of riddles ancient and modern. Ancient buried treasure, a brutal murder and lurking danger—an itinerary of terror across a holy terrain.

I apologize that this is .99. Amazon won’t allow me to offer it for free (long story), but if anyone really wants to read A Very Private Grave and cannot afford to buy it, let me know and I will make it available to you.

On the other hand, here is a group promotion in which they are all free. Eye Spy Mysteries and Thrillers offers free downloads from March 11 through April 10, plus a chance to win a $25 gift card. Download all the titles that interest you, but do check their information, as this includes a variety of ratings.

My title in this group is The Shadow of Reality, book 2 in my Elizabeth and Richard Literary Suspense series: A week at a resort high in the Rockies, enacting and solving a Dorothy L. Sayers-style mystery— a perfect spring break for two English professors. And all the more perfect for Elizabeth when the man of her dreams enters the scene. Until the play-acting embroils them in a real-life murder and the lines between reality and fiction blur dangerously. What happens when fantasy obscures the real world?

My video this month is a bit different—a 3 minute “what is Lent all about?” update in case anyone might find a refresher useful. Whether this is new information to you or you could have written it yourself, I wish you a blessed Lent with gentle spring weather.
