My Rip Van Winkle Experience

By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ July 10, 2010

After more than 20 years as a professional writer and more than 30 books published, I spent 10 years in the wilderness of the unpublished. Coming back has been like starting a whole new career— at a time when most of my friends are retiring. Ten years ago there was no Facebook, no Twitter, there were no Ebooks and no blogs. It’s little wonder, then that I feel like Rip Van Winkle.

Facebook I came to easily since my daughter set up my account for me so she could more easily share pictures of my grandchildren. Now that’s a natural process. I, much later, set up my Author page with considerable trepidation. Who would care? Why would anyone join? I’m still amazed and thrilled whenever I get a note from Facebook that someone new has "liked" my page. Ah, this Brave new World hath beauteous creatures in it, indeed

Twitter still bemuses me, and the conundrums of Ebooks I leave up to my publishers, but the joys of blogging have opened up a whole new aspect of our Euniverse. It is an ongoing delight to get better acquainted with my fellow bloggers here on "Deeds of Darkness; Deeds of Light" and I am thrilled every time a reader leaves a comment. I think it’s quite good for our newbie blog to have had almost 2000 visits last month from 642 unique visitors. Some days we receive as many as 80 visits. A big thank You to our readers! You are much appreciated.

Likewise, I am discovering the opportunities of getting acquainted with readers and writers around the world through the experience of guest blogging. This is a wonderful way to get the word of my new books out to readers I would be unlikely to meet anywhere else and every experience is completely unique.

Just this week I shared my favorite scone recipe and gave the elements of a proper English tea party on Recipe Wednesday on Chris Redding’s blog: http://chrisredddingauthor.blogspot.com/

The week before April’s interview on Cafe of Dreams led me to delve into how my childhood daydreams have affected my writing life and to divulge my fantasies for the future: http://www.cafeofdreamsbookreviews.com/search?updated-max=2010-07-05T11%3A30%3A00-05%3A00&max-results=8

One of my most unique experiences was being interviewed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at http://mozartandmoreno.blogspot.com/

And before that I was privileged to celebrate national Crime Fiction week in England without suffering jetlag by guesting on the blogs of two of my favorite English crime writers: Dolores Gordon-Smith at http://www.doloresgordon-smith.co.uk/wordpress/ You’ll have to scroll down a bit in Dolores’ posts to find it, but there are several pictures from some of my research adventures ad Dolores was interested in how I developed the background of my stories.

Again, you will have to scroll down a bit, to 17 June, to find my entry on Jane Finnis’ blog, http://janefinnisblog.wordpress.com/ where we talk about how Felicity Howard, my American heroine came to find herself in a monastery in rural Yorkshire.

Well, that’s just a sample of what I’ve been up to as I’ve come to discover that Sleepy Hollow isn’t so sleepy any more. If you’re interested in the complete tour so far, all the links are posted on my Facebook Author Page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Donna-Fletcher-Crow-Novelist-of-British-History/355123098656?ref=ts Scroll down a bit to the menu item "Links’ on the left-hand side. There you will find links to all the blogs where I have been so graciously welcomed.
