Father Unknown now an Ebook

I’m currently looking forward to my first ebook. Severn House will be

producing Father Unknown in electronic form on 1 April (I trust that’s not a joke), along with the paperback edition. It’s the fourth in the Suzie Fewings genealogical mystery series. The earlier ones will be converted to e-format soon after.

This is new territory for me. I look forward to seeing how ebook sales compare with print.

I was given a Kindle for Christmas. To be honest, I haven’t used it much yet. I also received a wonderful pile of books as Christmas presents and have only just worked my way through them. I did download Moby Dick. Out-of-copyright classics can often be obtained free. It’s on my to-read list. It’s decades since I last read it.

A trial run showed that the print quality and reading experience is fine, though I have a tendency to accidentally press the switch on the side which turns the page.

I can certainly see the advantage when I’m travelling of having a single tablet replace a pile of paperbacks in my case.

There is also the instant gratification of downloading the book as soon as you order.

What I don’t want to do is to switch my general book-buying habit from print to electronic. Nor to make too much use of Amazon if my local Waterstones can come up with the goods. We need high street bookshops, and should do our best to support them.

One helpful way of combing the two is to download the first chapter of a book I’m interested in to see how much I want to buy it. This, again, is free. And if the answer is yes, I can go along to the bookshop to make the purchase.

But as an author, I certainly don’t want to miss out on this new and growing market.

A Suzie Fewings genealogical mystery - Suzie Fewings is working on her family tree when she meets American Prudence Clayson. Prudence has come to England to find her Puritan ancestors, but is shocked to discover that one of her ancestors was born to an unmarried mother. Suzie helps Prudence come to terms with this and assists her with her research, but she soon has problems in the present day - when she starts to suspect that Millie, her teenage daughter, might be pregnant. The truth, however, may be darker than she fears . . .

Congratulations, Fay! i certainly share your mixed feelings about ebooks, but as a reader I applaud their convenience and as a writer I'm grateful to have the sales to supplement my print books.

As a Suzie Fewings fan I hope FATHER UNKNOWN will sell well in both versions!

I love print, too, Jenny. just returned from Monday morning concert--a young man played the piano for a roomful of music lovers and I thought, "Live music is to a CD as reading a print book is to an ereader." Both have their place, but it's a different experience.
